My name is Ria Hills. I've been part of the daily
painting movement on the web for the past year. Painting surreal at
times myself, I decided to
create a site of other present day surrealist painters. As I browsed the web in my search for artists to interview I was astounded at the volume of surrealists and the
amazing quality of work. My plan is to interview one of these artists on a weekly basis. If you are interested in being featured on this blog please check the contact
page. Interested in the paintings on

Surrealist painting is the expression of imagination as revealed in dreams, free of
the conscious control of reason and free of convention. The works feature the element of surprise and unexpected juxtapositions. The movement was founded (1924) in Paris by André
Breton who was explicit in his assertion that Surrealism was above all a revolutionary movement, but it is traced back to the
Italian painter, Giorgio de Chirico . Many of its adherents had belonged to the Dada
movement. In literature, surrealism was confined almost exclusively to France. In art the movement became dominant in
the 1920s and 30s and was internationally practiced with many and varied forms of expression. Salvador Dalí
and Yves Tanguy used dreamlike perception of space and dream-inspired symbols. Max Ernst and René Magritte
constructed fantastic imagery from startling combinations of incongruous elements of reality painted with photographic attention to detail. Their paintings involve transformations of the real world. Although
the movement was greatly diminished after World War II, it still survives today. The list to the right is comprised of known Surrealists during that era. The
purpose of this website is to familiarize you with present day surrealists. Some are known, others may not have been discovered yet their work demonstrates that the
movement has definitely lived on.
Dictionary: Surrealism, n. Pure psychic automatism, by which one proposes to express, either verbally, in writing, or by any other
manner, the real functioning of thought. Dictation of thought in the absence of all control exercised by reason, outside of all aesthetic and moral preoccupation.
Encyclopedia:
Surrealism. Philosophy. Surrealism is based on the belief in the superior reality of certain forms of previously neglected associations, in the omnipotence of dream, in
the disinterested play of thought. It tends to ruin once and for all other psychic mechanisms and to substitute itself for them in solving all the principal problems of
life.

contact page if you are a surrealist painter
requesting to set up an interview. You can learn more about SP on the ABOUT
